Vanity libraries

WHEN I visited a grandiose public library in a city in central China recently, I found few readers. It was built in a new district far away from local residential communities.

Many other cities do likewise - they build luxurious cultural facilities such as libraries in new and remote districts, which is very inconvenient for most residents who do not work or live nearby. These are vanity projects, a waste of cultural resources.
