Big-house mindset ill-suited to modern reality

WANG Shi, chairman of Vanke Co, China's largest residential property developer, has written in his recent book that Chinese living on the mainland "are in no positon" to live in big houses, those of at least 100 square meters.

He was also gloomy about a further drop in housing prices and said China is not resourceful enough to meet everyone's expectations.

His opinions are bound to cause a public outcry, but they do make sense.

Most of us are not rich enough to afford a big house and shouldn't have blind faith in our ability to live a luxurious lifestyle, otherwise, we would be overwhelmed by huge debt.

In fact our deep-rooted "big-house mentality" was born out of a small-scale peasant economy, which was dominant thousands of years ago.

We should gradually abandon this old-fashioned ideas.

Even if income rises, we still do not advocate that people buy big houses to show off or make irrational comparisons with more affluent classes.

Instead, we should think first about the size of the family.

It is shameful to be jealous of other people's material wealth, while neglecting to elevate our own spiritual wealth.
