Burning dispute over officials paid for fire fighting

MORE than a month has passed since a forest fire was put out in a village in Chongqing City, but fierce public debates over official misbehavior in fire fighting continue to this day.

A big forest fire broke out on April 2 in Longtan Village. It was put out the next day. Later, local officials were given subsidies for having participated in fire fighting - 700 yuan (US$110) per person per day.

But locals reported that officials were not supposed to be subsidized for helping to put out a fire. Payment was an outright violation of government rules.

On May 25, higher authorities heeded public criticism and disciplined the two main officials involved by lowering their administrative ranks.

Local people should have been satisfied by the decision, but to their dismay, the two disciplined officials remain de facto No. 1 and No. 2 in the local administration - which violates government rules that any official removed from his or her original post cannot be restored to that post for one year.
