Colleges teach how to curry official favor

HOW to dine or drive with senior government officials is considered an art that many college students are eager to learn.

China Youth Daily reported on May 21 that many colleges in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Hubei Province and Fujian Province have designed courses that advise students about to graduate on how they should present and deport themselves before government leaders in various occasions.

That says a lot about those colleges' skewed world view.

They want their students to curry favor with officials in the belief that official cronyism rather than professional competence is the easiest path to promotion.

In traditional Chinese culture, teachers are supposed to be the carriers of a noble spirit as well as great learning. But nowadays, many college teachers have lost their moral high ground and lowered themselves to groveling before money and power.

Some colleges are crazy for more and more high-rise office buildings and some teachers are mad about making money on the side - both at the expense of educating students to be men of noble spirit.

Premier Wen Jiabao has told college students to cultivate an interest in doing something good for the nation, not to crave a high official title.

Contrary to the premier's teaching, so many colleges advise their students to do quite the opposite. What a mistake.
