Don't blame scholar who spurns grassroots

A FEMALE doctoral candidate in economics has come under public opinion fire since she blogged that after graduation she would never go to work in poor, grassroots society.

It's wrong to put all the blame on the student at Xiamen University that sent her and others on a summer study trip to the countryside.

Very few people ask this question: Why can't a poor county attract a doctoral candidate, even with the best food and accommodation it has to offer?

Let's compare Xiamen, where the student pursues economics, and Zhenghe, the poor county that hosted the study trip for her and other students.

The distance between the places is only 550 kilometers, but Xiamen is far richer. If you were a student at Xiamen University, you probably would also choose to stay in Xiamen.

What's more, what a doctoral candidate in economics learns is usually out of sync with grassroots reality and, in many cases, grassroots officials do not appreciate the value of a college graduate on their turf.

Instead of blaming the student for a moral lapse, let's focus instead on why grassroots society cannot easily attract people with advanced degrees.
