Fraudsters buy official posts 'to serve the people'

YANG Yuliang, president of Fudan University, recently said that a nation's spiritual and cultural decay can be embodied by an individual who is cheeky enough to sugarcoat bureaucratese with noble-sounding words.

Yang was referring to an acquaintance who bought an official position and said euphemistically that "I just want to buy a chance to serve the people." Compared to the sale of official ranks in days of yore, which was conducted openly and left the impression that no official was clean, the trade today has moved underground.

Since this is a trade, there are costs and benefits. And serving people apparently brings enormous benefits. Some manage to "get rich first" through their "services." These days, there are more "public servants" who are willing to devote their finite life to the infinite service of people.

In Chongqing Municipality, the deputy head of a county-level health bureau was recently given a reprieved jail term of three years for taking bribes. During the trial, he begged the judges for mercy, to give him a chance to "serve the people again."
