'Happiness Index' fanfare misses 'Trouble Index'
THE "Happiness Index" is getting popular nowadays, but it may be time to create a "Trouble Index" as well, for without an understanding of troubles, it's difficult to be happy.
Babbling about "happiness" doesn't really make you happy; overcoming troubles one by one does.
Peking University has just completed a survey of white-collar professionals in 28 major Chinese cities. It was found that the "trouble index" of those people surveyed hit a high of 48.22 - not a small deal.
The survey may not be 100 percent scientifically sound, but it alerts us of the need to heed people's troubles, instead of only talking about happiness.
Troubles persist indeed, from overwork to road rage. Government officials should pay great attention to what preys on people's minds, if our society is going to be harmonious.
