Official: 'shameless' folks have no right to hope for cars
AN apology is not enough from an official who tried to justify his "entitlement" to privilege over ordinary people.
Guo Dongbo, director of the municipal environmental protection bureau of Liaoyuan City, Jilin Province, apologized on May 24 for his controversial statement: "Leaders are naturally entitled to riding a horse or sitting in a car, so it's shameless for ordinary people to hope to be likewise entitled."
Guo admitted to making the remark earlier this year, after it was published on the Internet on May 22. But his "sincere apology to the people and the Netizens" on May 24 lacks sincerity.
First, he insisted in his apology that the remark was made in a "special context," that is, a bureau-wide and non-public conference.
But hey, no official is entitled to belittle the people in any context. He was dead wrong, arrogant and offensive.
Second, he did not take the initiative to apologize. He only said sorry after media pressure built up and local Party discipline officials approached him.
All in all, if an apology solves all the problems, why do we need police? Guo has to answer not just to the people, but to Party discipline.
