Party chiefs should swim to prove water's safe
TO prove that a city's water is clean, it's not enough just to ask the top local environment official to take a dip in the rivers. Someone higher up should take the leap.
Chen Derong, Party secretary of Wenzhou City, Zhejiang Province, has reportedly asked his environment officials to swim in local rivers to prove that they are free from pollution.
Indeed, environment officials should bear the brunt of public blame for water pollution.
But an open secret is that environment officials often are powerless before polluting firms, which are the pillars of local economies.
In many cities, only smaller polluting firms are closed. Big ones survive, however wildly they pollute local environment.
That reflects an ancient Chinese saying: "Those who steal a hook are executed, while those who steal a state are crowned."
To really punish big polluting firms and clean up rivers, local Party secretaries should take the leap in swimming in any river designated by citizens. And if mayors jump into rivers together, all the better.
