Scuffle over metro seat reveals social competition

A SCUFFLE between two women over a metro seat last Thursday has made the rounds on social media.

It is reported that a young lady failed to get the seat in her struggle with an "auntie" on Metro Line 1 and then proceeded to sit on the older woman's legs in an effort to crowd her out.

This triggered a long fight that did not stop despite passengers offering their seats to the two women.

The brawl hurts not only the two women but also other passengers and disrupts the social order. Why don't we make compromises to solve conflicts?

Our anger will be eased if we try to be considerate and modest when we feel bothered and misunderstood. Meanwhile, the people we give way to will be touched and both sides will be in a positive mood.

The increasingly fierce competition in society has pushed people to become aggressive and highly irritable. Therefore, people tend to deal with problems by using violence, rather than compromise, which leaves a deep scar on society.

Since conflicts spring up in the current period of economic reform, we are expected to adjust ourselves to the changing world by behaving with tolerance and courtesy in order to create a joyful life and harmonious society.
