Whitewashing only makes spots darker

EVERYONE can be a news agency unto himself or herself as new media are growing fast.

Certainly, not everyone qualifies as quality press, but collectively their voices reflect relentless public pursuit of science and democracy. Government officials should learn to heed the slightest of those voices instead of giving gag orders.

On March 9, Li Changchun said: "The more you try to whitewash any dark spot when you find it, the more likely it will become darker." Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remark in a group discussion during the fifth session of the 11th National People's Congress that ended yesterday.

Unfortunately, some local officials fear negative public voices against them. They overlook people's expectations for science, democracy and rule of law. They ignore the central government's expectations for local officials to "listen down."

Let's make it clear that officials must be evaluated on how transparent they are to the public.
