Farmer stands up to crooked village head
SEE how an honest farmer stood up to a crooked village head. To this day he defiantly bears the scars.
Wu Shuxun suffered a broken leg after three thugs attacked him with iron bars on last August 1, on a road in Yuanyang County in central China's Henan Province.
The thugs were hired by the head of Wu's village, Wang Hengli. The thugs confessed after they were cuffed and taken away. Wang has also been arrested.
Wu was so poor that his family could not afford surgery on his broken leg. Relatives of the arrested village head offered to pay for his surgery - on condition that Wu withdraw his charge against Wang. Wu refused. "I would rather lose my leg forever than forgive him and other bad guys who have tried to rob our land," fumed the 66-year-old Wu in an interview with local media.
Wu had represented his fellow villagers in their protest against Wang and his coterie who illegally contracted out the village's collectively held land in 2007 to a grain trader who wanted to build a warehouse.
Wu won the support of the county government, which nullified the contract. Wang sought revenge against the honest farmer.
If every Chinese farmer is as brave and reasonable as Wu, there's hope for rural democracy in the true sense of the phrase.
