9-ball queen holding on to her dream

The 2018 World 9-Ball China Open is getting under way at Tangzhen County in the Pudong New Area.

Now in its 10th year, the competition attracted 64 male and 48 female players from home and abroad, including China’s first female billiards world champion Pan Xiaoting.

The 36-year-old, nicknamed China’s 9-Ball Queen‚ said she is not planning for retirement yet, but still holds the dream of taking part in the Olympic Games if it ever becomes inaugurated.

“I haven’t thought too much about age, and have kept a good playing form,” Pan said. “Collection of experience is crucial in 9-ball, and self-confidence is sometimes more important than accuracy.

“I still enjoy and cherish the time spent with my teammates during every national training. Seven to eight hours of training per day can be tiring, but I enjoy being part of a team.”

After collecting 10 world titles, Pan said winning no longer her only purpose.

“There are two playing methods. One is to play for the championship, which is more serious and tensive,” said Pan.

“The other is to present a show to the spectators and let them feel the charm of the sport. I’m in a more relaxed status now.

“If I can’t win a competition, I’ll present a show for the audience instead.”

The final of this year’s China Open will be held on Sunday. After a decade of development, the tournament has grown into China’s most mature 9-ball pool competition.
