Argentina finishes perfect
ARGENTINA defeated England 2-0 on Monday in a match between the top two teams in Pool B of the women's field hockey World Cup. Noel Barrionuevo and Daniela Sruoga scored for the winners.
The victory guaranteed Argentina first place with 15 points from five matches. England finished second with 10 points.
"It was a great game," Argentina coach Carlos Retegui said. "England has grown a lot over the past years. To hold them without a penalty corner or a clear shot on goal - I think Argentina is the fair winner."
England coach Danny Kerry agreed, but said his team was closing fast on the world's best.
"I think the gap between us has closed," Kerry said. "I think Argentina is still better than us, but we got better quicker than they have."
In the other Pool B matches, South Korea defeated South Africa 5-3 to clinch third place and China overwhelmed Spain 6-0 to finish fourth.
Five different players scored for the Koreans and Ma Yibo scored four for China.
Pool A finishes with Germany playing Australia for second place. Defending champion the Netherlands has already clinched first place and Australia must win to finish second. Germany will finish second with a draw because of a better goal difference.
In other games, New Zealand plays India and the Netherlands takes on Japan.
The semifinals are tomorrow when the Netherlands will play England and Argentina faces either Australia or Germany. The final is on Saturday.
Teams finishing in third through sixth place in each pool will play off for fifth to 12th place.
