Argentina keeps Champions for 3rd straight year

ARGENTINA won the Women's Champions Trophy for the third straight year by beating Olympic and world champion the Netherlands 4-2 on Sunday.

Noel Barrionuevo scored the tournament's first hat-trick for Argentina, all from penalty corners.

Argentina, which also won in 2001, led 3-1 at half-time.

Barrionuevo put Argentina ahead in the ninth minute before Kelly Jonker equalized nine minutes later.

Two goals in five minutes - from Carla Rebecchi in the 26th and Barrionuevo in the 30th - put Argentina in control.

Maartje Goderie raised Dutch hopes with a field goal in the 56th but Barrionuevo made it 4-2 in the 68th.

The Argentine was the tournament's top scorer with eight goals.

No. 2-ranked Argentina, whose captain Luciana Aymar was chosen as the player of the tournament, also beat the top-ranked Dutch 4-2 in the round-robin on Thursday.

England rallied to beat Germany 2-1 in the third-place playoff.

New Zealand defeated China 4-3 in the fifth-place playoff in its first win at the Champions Trophy since 2002.

A record 75 goals were scored in the tournament.
