Aussie women break 4x100 free relay world mark

Australia’s 4x100-meter women’s freestyle relay team has done it again, breaking its own world record on the opening night of the swim program at the Commonwealth Games.

Australia, with sisters Bronte and Cate Campbell, Emma McKeon and Shayna Jack, clocked a time of 3 minutes, 30.5 seconds yesterday at the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre.

That broke the mark of 3:30.65 the team clocked at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in 2016, when the Campbell sisters and McKeon were part of the team.

Canada finished second, with England taking the bronze.

Also, Olympic champion Mack Horton became Australia’s first 400 freestyle winner at the Games since the great Ian Thorpe. Horton swam a perfectly judged race to reel in teammate Jack McLoughlin and England’s James Guy to win gold in 3 minutes 43.76 seconds.

Earlier, Australian cyclists also won the men’s 4,000-meter team pursuit in a world record 3:49.804 to secure gold.

Kelland O’Brien joined Leigh Howard, Alex Porter and Sam Welsford to beat England for the title and lower the previous record of 3:50.265 which Britain set at Rio de Janeiro in 2016. It was Australia’s second gold medal yesterday, the opening night of competition at the Anna Meares Velodrome in Brisbane.

The Gold Coast is staging the 21st edition of the Commonwealth Games, but cycling and shooting events are being held in refurbished Brisbane venues that were initially built for the 1982 Games.
