Aussies pummel South Africa
AUSTRALIA achieved the biggest win in the history of field hockey's World Cup by hammering South Africa 12-0 in New Delhi yesterday.
Penalty corner specialist Luke Doerner scored four times and Jamie Dwyer three as Australia eclipsed the previous record of 12-3 by Pakistan over New Zealand in Bombay in 1982.
Australia's previous best World Cup scoreline was 9-0 against Ghana in 1975.
"It's not every day that we score 12 goals, but I was not aware that it was a record," Australia coach Ric Charlesworth said. "I liked the way we played throughout the game, we were relentless."
Glenn Turner scored twice, while Desmond Abbott, Fergus Kavanagh and Matthew Butturini also made one entry in the scorebook.
Australia took 16 minutes to score then led 5-0 at halftime, and finished with three in the last eight minutes.
The teams hadn't met since Australia won 10-0 at the Beijing Olympics.
Australia has six points from three Pool B matches, while South Africa remained winless.
On Wednesday, Olympic champion Germany brushed aside Canada 6-0 in a Pool A game after the world's top-ranked side moved up a gear in its bid for a third straight title.
Benjamin Wess slammed a third-minute goal to put the Pan-American champion under early pressure as Germany raced to a 4-0 lead at halftime after having rallied to draw 2-2 with South Korea in the opening game on Monday.
Former champion the Netherlands defeated New Zealand 3-1 for its second successive victory and the Koreans snatched a 2-1 win against Argentina off a last-minute goal in the other Pool A matches on Wednesday at the Dhyan Chand National Hockey Stadium.
Forward Florian Fuchs scored twice in the second half as Germany took complete control after Jan-Marco Montag, captain Maximilian Mueller and Martin Haener scored off penalty corners in the first half.
Argentina, which lost its opening game to the Netherlands, went ahead through Facundo Callioni in the 53rd.
South Korea equalized through Lee Nam-yong in the 62nd while Nam Hyun-woo scored off a penalty corner in the last minute.
Penalty corner specialist Taeke Taekema scored his fourth goal of the tournament to lead a hot performance by the Dutch after scoring a hat-trick in the opening game.
Beside Pool B leader England, the Netherlands was the only other team with two wins from two games. It topped Pool A with six points, two more than Germany and South Korea. New Zealand had three, while Argentina and Canada zero.
