Australia beats England to retain Champions Trophy

AUSTRALIA beat surprise finalist England 4-0 on Sunday to win the Champions Trophy field hockey tournament in Moenchengladbach in Germany for the third straight year.

Australia was 3-0 ahead by the 14th minute. Luke Doerner scored in the sixth off a penalty corner, Desmond Abbott made it 2-0 only a minute later and Jason Wilson added the third.

Player of the tournament Jamie Dwyer added a fourth in the 49th at Warsteiner Hockey Park after the halftime interval was extended due to heavy rain.

Australia has lost only once to England in a competitive match in 35 years and the Kookaburras were heavy favorites. England had never previously finished higher than fifth in the tournament.

Australia also won a hat trick of trophy titles from 1983-85.

Eight-time champion Netherlands beat Olympic champion Germany 4-1 in the third-place playoff. Teun de Nooijer scored twice for the Netherlands to move second in all-time Champions Trophy scorers. De Nooijer has 42 goals, behind countryman Taeke Taekema with 45.

Olympic silver medalist Spain beat New Zealand 3-2 in the fifth-place playoff.
