Australia punishes Kiwis 9-1 to equal record

AUSTRALIA equaled the biggest winning margin in Champions Trophy history when it routed transtasman rival New Zealand 9-1 to begin its bid for a third straight title in Moenchengladbach, Germany, on Saturday.

The Netherlands enjoyed a 5-2 tournament-opening win over Spain for a third successive year. Spain conceded four first-half goals for the first time since 1981.

Jeroen Hertzberger twice, Teun de Nooijer and Mink van der Weerden scored for the Dutch in the first half, and Rogier Hofman in the second. Ramon and David Alegre replied for Spain.

Olympic champion Germany beat England 4-2, running ahead 4-0 through Oskar Deecke, Jan-Marco Montag, Martin Haner.
