Australian jockey dies after Singapore return
AUSTRALIAN jockey Nathan Berry died in a Sydney hospital yesterday after being struck down with an illness while riding in Singapore last month.
Berry returned to Sydney earlier yesterday on a special medical flight from Singapore, where he had been in hospital for two weeks after collapsing at track work at the Singapore Turf Club.
He was first diagnosed with suspected viral encephalitis and later with Norse syndrome, which causes severe seizures.
The 23-year-old Berry, who had more than 350 career wins, including the US$2 million Magic Millions Classic in January, was placed in an induced coma last week and although he made some improvement, by Tuesday his condition had deteriorated.
