Birthday boy Stoner takes Australia pole
AUSTRALIA'S Casey Stoner celebrated his 25th birthday by taking pole position at the Australian Grand Prix qualifying yesterday.
The Ducati rider clocked the fastest lap of one minute 30.107 seconds in the final minutes just before a rain-shower broke to delight home fans and give himself every chance of clinching a fourth consecutive title at his home grand prix at Phillip Island. Newly-crowned world champion Jorge Lorenzo will be second on the grid for today's race with American Yamaha rider Ben Spies third. Ducati riders Hector Barbera of Spain and American Nicky Hayden both crashed but escaped unscathed.
