Boston’s Clay Buchholz made an impressive return from a long-term injury to pitch the Red Sox to a 2-0 win over Tampa Bay on Tuesday in a game that significantly strengthened their hold on a playoff spot. The win moved the Red Sox 8-1/2 games clear of the Rays atop the American League East, with 16 and 19 games respectively left in the regular season. Tampa Bay missed a chance to improve its wild-card hopes as the nearest teams in the race lost: Baltimore was beaten by the New York Yankees, Cleveland was defeated by Kansas City, Oakland was edged by Minnesota and Texas also lost.
