Boxer Vijender clears drug test
INDIA'S sports ministry says Olympic boxer Vijender Singh has tested negative for banned substances after police claimed last month he was a heroin user.
The ministry said in a statement yesterday that a "full menu test was conducted which included testing for psychotropic substances". The National Anti-Doping Agency undertook the out-of-competition tests at Vijender's request after police in the northern state of Punjab claimed Vijender's name came up during an investigation into a heroin haul worth more than US$25 million. Vijender, a middleweight bronze medalist at the 2008 Beijing Games, refused to undergo tests by police but agreed to being tested by NADA.
