Brazil spikers win World Grand Prix
OLYMPIC gold medalist Brazil defeated Japan in four sets to defend its World Grand Prix women's volleyball title in Tokyo on Sunday.
The powerful Brazilians won 25-21, 25-27, 25-19, 25-19 to finish with a perfect 5-0 record in the six-team round robin final. The victory gave Brazil its eighth championship since the annual tournament began in 1993. Earlier, world champion Russia secured second place by defeating the Netherlands in straight sets 25-20, 25-23, 25-21. Germany placed third, beating China 25-14, 23-25, 25-21, 25-14. Japan came last with a 1-4 record. Next year's competition will begin on August 6, with the final round to be held in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province.
