Burnley hit by last-gasp penalty
Alexis Sanchez scored a last-minute penalty to give Arsenal a 1-0 win at Burnley in the English Premier League yesterday.
James Tarkowski was adjudged to have pushed Aaron Ramsey in the area and Sanchez coolly put away the penalty two minutes into added time to secure a vital three points for Arsenal.
It was only the second away victory in the EPL for the Gunners this season and came against a Burnley side that came into the game on a three-match winning streak, in which it had not conceded.
The win moves Arsenal back above Tottenham Hotspur and into the top four, but it could fall 12 points behind leader Manchester City, which plays Huddersfield later.
With Mesut Ozil absent through illness, Arsenal struggled to create openings. Ramsey wasted its best moment of the first half as he half-volleyed over the bar when unmarked in the box.
Burnley posed a constant threat with its physicality and came close to breaking the deadlock when Petr Cech tipped Johann Berg Gudmundsson’s strike onto the post.
Earlier, Charlie Austin scored two goals on his first EPL start this season as Southampton crushed Everton 4-1.
Gylfi Sigurdsson’s long-range strike canceled out Dusan Tadic’s opener, but Austin scored two second-half headers before Steven Davis rounded off the scoring to give the Saints a deserved victory over the Toffees.
Former Everton player David Unsworth has been in temporary charge since Ronald Koeman was fired on October 23, but has managed just one win during his seven-game tenure. The club is still searching for a permanent replacement, with Unsworth’s failure to improve results likely having ruled him out.
Everton is now 16th, just two points clear of the drop zone. Southampton rose to 10th.
