CAS sets up Asian unit in Shanghai
THE Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has established its first Shanghai Alternative Hearing Center yesterday to resolve sports-related disputes involving parties from China and East Asia, the organization announced yesterday.
John Coates, CAS President, said the Shanghai unit will ensure speedy resolution of disputes while reducing the travel costs of the parties. "Otherwise they would have to travel to our headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland, to be heard in person, or simply be unable to access arbitration," Coates said. Nearly half of CAS's arbitration was related to football. The CAS was created by the Olympic Committee in 1994 and has become recognized as the independent world court for sport.
