CFA denies plans for 50 naturalized players

The Chinese Football Association has denied rumors that it plans to introduce 50 naturalized players, saying that 鈥渢he number of naturalized players will be very limited, while the foreign players鈥 policy in the professional leagues won鈥檛 have big changes.鈥

In a statement released yesterday, the CFA noted that 鈥渢he report that the 鈥楥FA has a 50-naturalized-player quota鈥 is completely false information.鈥

鈥淭he CFA will execute a very careful policy to introduce a strictly limited number of naturalized players,鈥 said the Chinese football governing body, whose president Chen Xuyuan revealed in August that a total of nine naturalized players have been registered with the CFA.

In addition, the CFA also said the current foreign players鈥 policy won鈥檛 be changed dramatically for the sake of 鈥渢he stability of the professional leagues.鈥

鈥淭he CFA has never discussed canceling foreign player limits,鈥 it pointed out. According to current policy in the Chinese Super League, each club can feature a maximum of three foreign players simultaneously in a match.

鈥淭he CFA will publish new regulations on naturalized players and foreign players by the end of the year, which is for the healthy development of the professional leagues, Chinese footballers and young players.鈥

Guangzhou Evergrande鈥檚 Brazil-born striker Elkeson, or Ai Kesen, is China鈥檚 highest profile naturalized player. The Chinese national team is now in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, ahead of its 2022 World Cup qualifier against Syria today.
