Chan defends title

DRAWING on the energy of a supportive crowd, Canada's Patrick Chan overcame a less than perfect free skate in Quebec City on Saturday to become the first repeat champion of figure skating's Grand Prix Final since 2001, when Russian Evgeni Plushenko did it. Chan scored 173.67 points in the free program for a combined score of 260.30 points, ahead of Japan's Daisuke Takahashi (249.12) and Spain's Javier Fernandez (247.55). Carolina Kostner of Italy captured the women's singles crown. She pushed Akiko Suzuki of Japan into second, with Alena Leonova of Russia taking bronze.
