China qualifies for London
CHINA defeated Germany in straight sets yesterday to seal a spot in the top three of the women's World Cup in Tokyo that ensured an automatic berth for the London Olympic Games.
The 25-18, 25-18 and 25-21 win was marked by China's strong blocking and balanced attacking as Hui Ruoqi and Xu Yunli posted 11 points, Wang Yimei notched 10, and Ma Yunwen and Zhang Lei both scored nine.
"This is the best game we have played in the World Cup," said Chinese coach Yu Juemin. "It was a crucial match and the players withstood the pressure. We showed our best level today."
Chinese captain Wei Qiuyue said the win gave a boost to China's confidence as the team experienced ups and downs in the year.
Germany started with an early 5-2 lead but China rallied to pull ahead 11-6 on a run of six unanswered that included three errant spikes from Germany and was capped by an ace from Chinese spiker Hui Ruoqi.
China had difficulty to start the second set, but Wei showed great alertness, tipping to an open spot when Germany expected her to set.
Xu Yunli kept a check on Germany's leading scorer Angelina Grun. The set was even 16-16 when Xu sparked a 9-2 run with a great tip at the net and followed it up with an ace.
Italy and the United States had already booked their tickets to London as the top and second-ranked teams in the World Cup.
