China tops Kenya as it eyes London berth
CHINA overwhelmed winless Kenya in straight sets at the women's World Cup in Tokyo yesterday as the Asian powerhouse gears up for a final battle against Germany for an early entry to the London Olympics.
China won 25-7, 25-15, 25-10 with captain Wei Qiuyue being voted the most impressive player in the match for her active organization and meticulous aces from the service line.
"We are happy to win the match today, but now our focus has shifted to tomorrow's game against Germany," said Wei. "We will be well prepared."
She grabbed 23 points and said that with a spot in the top four, the team was already satisfied with the current results and has no pressure going into the next big game.
Chinese coach Yu Juemin echoed similar sentiments, saying their goal prior to the World Cup was top six, and what they have achieved was beyond expectation.
"Of course we will do our best to win tomorrow's match, but I don't want the players to bear too much stress, which will adversely affect their play," Yu said.
Kenya was coming off a rough game against hosts Japan on Wednesday, but stuck with China early to start the first with hard drives from Everlyne Makuto and its captain Brackcides Khadambi staying within two at 7-5. But Kenya's attacks were very erratic and it looked nervous as it misfired on six spikes that helped China pull off a run of 13 unanswered points to go ahead 22-6.
China had Fan Linlin and Xu Yunli come off the bench in the second set that helped in finishing the set 25-15.
China continued with an early lead of 19-4 with Ma Yunwen and Zhang Lei's spikes. It was Xu Liyi's two aces from the service line that helped China to close out at 25-10.
Top three teams from the World Cup will qualify for the London Olympics.
