China's Hou retains women's chess title
CHINA'S Hou Yifan, the reigning world champion, successfully defended her title on Thursday against her Indian challenger Koneru Humpy in Tirana, Albania.
After two and a half hours of play, Hou drew with Humpy in the eighth game of the 10-game match. In the eight games, Hou won three games and drew five games, accumulating 5.5 points. The winner of the 10-game match is the first player to reach 5.5 points or more. Humpy made the first move with the white. In the eighth game, she realized she had no chance of winning and then proposed a draw, which Hou accepted. This is the first time that the World Chess Federation has opted for the format of classical match featuring two players since the year 2000. The 200,000 euros in prize money will be split between the players. The winner gets 60 percent and the loser 40 percent.
