Chinese fighter dies in bid to make weight

Mixed martial arts fighter Yang Jianping of China died after collapsing from severe dehydration in his attempt to make the weight for a flyweight bout in the Philippines.
The organizer, One Championship, said that the 21-year-old had been pronounced dead at a Manila hospital from cardiopulmonary failure on Friday, hours before the scheduled fight.
鈥淵ang, a native of China was hospitalized at the San Juan De Dios Hospital... after a sudden collapse on the morning of 10 December 2015,鈥 said a statement on the organizer鈥檚 website yesterday.
The statement did not say what caused the collapse of Yang who last fought in June.
On Friday, One Championship had said in a separate statement that Yang鈥檚 fight with a Filipino flyweight 鈥渉as been cancelled due to Yang鈥檚 severe dehydration from attempting to make weight鈥.
It said the Chinese fighter was suspected to have suffered from 鈥渄ehydration and suspected heat stroke鈥 and had been taken to hospital to undergo 鈥渋ntensive rehydration treatment鈥.
A one-minute silence was held at the venue on Friday to honor Yang, Loren Mack, a spokesman for One Championship, said. The One Championship website home page was partly blacked out with a one-line announcement: 鈥淚n Loving Memory of Yang Jianping (1994-2015).鈥
One Championship chief executive Victor Cui said on the website: 鈥淭here is nothing more profoundly tragic and sad than when a member of the One Championship family, current or past, passes away.鈥
In the last message posted on his Weibo social media site on November 30, Yang had been upbeat about the fight. 鈥淚鈥檓 excited, I have been struggling for so long and I鈥檓 finally able to participate in One FC, the top Asian competition,鈥 he wrote.
鈥淚 have been waiting for this opportunity for so many years! Please grant me power, make me really feel the passion of this competition.鈥
