Chinese media robbed in S. Africa

FOUR Chinese reporters sent to cover the World Cup in South Africa were robbed in Johannesburg.

The reporters were from east China's Anhui Province. A group of armed robbers hijacked their car as they were parking, forcing them to surrender all their cash and cameras.

One victim said South Africa was not safe and added that visitors should always keep the car windows shut, Beijing News reported today. Luckily, no one was hurt in the robbery.

The report said another reporter from Beijing was also robbed days earlier.

The opening match of 2010 football World Cup will take place tomorrow at Soweto, a town outside Johannesburg. But the robbery raised safety concerns about the country's rampant crime.

A Chinese migrant surnamed Wang living in South Africa said robberies were only too common in the country.

Shooting between robbers and police took place in Cape Town last Sunday. Cape Town was will also host World Cup matches.
