Chinese national marathon team grows chicken to ensure food safety
China's national marathon team is living on organic food as they are busy training for the London Summer Olympics in Lijiang in southwestern Yunnan Province, a newspaper revealed yesterday.
The coaches raise chicken themselves, buy fish caught in the nearby Jinsha River and procure yak beef from the highland herdsmen to prevent their athletes from eating meat that may contain additives in local restaurants, the Chongqing Economic Times reported.
To avoid eating food that may contain substances banned by the Olympic Committee as performance-enhancing drugs, the athletes just ate vegetables in the first few days after arriving in their Lijiang training base, the paper said.
"We choose Lijiang because of its comfortable weather. Since we don't need to a standard track and don't have a canteen to provide safe food, we have to cook meals ourselves because it is risky to eat in a street restaurant," a team official said.
