Chinese stars make a splash as Park soars
CHINA maintained its dominance in the Asian Games pool yesterday by claiming five gold medals, with only South Korea's Park Tae-hwan breaking the hosts' supremacy in the men's 200 meters freestyle.
Japan was left without a gold as multiple Olympic champion Kosuke Kitajima's Guangzhou debut fell flat with fourth place in the men's 50 breaststroke.
"I am very happy, yet my races in the Games are not even half way through," said Park, who finished in one minute 44.8 seconds to break the Asian record he set two years ago at the Beijing Olympics.
Dubbed Marine Boy at home, Park stormed ahead and punched the water in celebration when he turned to check the clock after hitting the wall. His win also marked the first swimming gold that didn't go to either China or Japan.
Otherwise, the hosts were unstoppable with Zhao Jin setting a new Asian record of two minutes 6.46 seconds in winning the women's 200 backstroke. "I trained in Australia before the Asian Games. I did not do well in the training, but I think it paid off," Zhao said.
Japan's Reiko Nakamura's set the record two years ago at the Beijing Olympics.
Xie Zhi won the men's 50 breaststroke with Kitajima, Japan's biggest draw at the Asian Games swimming, finishing out of the medals.
"I don't know what to say. Even though it is my best result of this year, I did not get a medal," said Kitajima.
"I will try my best in the 100 meters later," said Kitajima who will also take part in the 200 breaststroke.
Kitajima's teammate Ryo Tateishi was second.
Fourteen-year-old Yeh Shiwen won the women's 400 individual medley while Zhou Jiawei won the men's 100 butterfly and China completed its haul by also taking the women's 4x100 freestyle relay at the Aoti Aquatics Center.
