Chinese win top honors at IAAF race-walking event

The Chinese team took top honors at the 2014 IAAF World Race Walking Cup that wound up yesterday in Taicang, Jiangsu Province, winning four gold medals, five silvers and one bronze.

The Russian team was group runner-up.

Yesterday’s races were run in a steady rain. In the morning, Chinese walkers Duan Dandan and Yang Jiayu captured the top two spots, respectively, in the junior women's 10K race. They also helped the Chinese team win the group gold medal in the race.

In a shocking setback for China, London Olympic champion Chen Ding came in only 15th in the senior men's 20K race. It was thought that Taicang might be a lucky city for Chen, as he won the 2012 IAAF World Race Walking Challenge there, which gave him entry into the Olympics later that year. Chen said he caught a cold four days before the event and was not in top condition.

In the men’s senior race, Ukrainian Ruslan Dmytrenko, considered a dark horse, finished first in 1 hour, 18 minutes, and 17 seconds to take home a prize of US$30,000. Chinese walker Cai Zelin was 30 seconds back, taking the silver.

“Taicang has been a miracle for me,” said Dmytrenko. "Despite being in good shape (after his win at the IAAF Race Walking Challenge race in Switzerland) before the race, this result was still unimaginable.”

Earlier on Saturday, the Chinese and Russian teams were the biggest winners on the first day of the. The Russians won two races while the hosts grabbed one gold medal.

China’s Gao Wenkui won the junior men’s 10-kilometer race in an event record time of 39 minutes, 40 seconds. Gao took the lead at the start and never relinquished it despite pressure from Japan’s Daisuke Matsunaga, who took silver, finishing five seconds behind Gao. The Chinese team also won the group gold medal in the race.

Meanwhile, Russians finished 1-2 in the senior men’s 50K race, with Mikhail Ryzhov dominating in 3 hours, 39 minutes, and 5 seconds. Ivan Noskov was 33 seconds behind him.

The Russian team also won the women’s 20K race in the evening. Anisya Kirdyapkina grabbed the second gold for her country while Chinese walker Liu Hong settled for silver.
