City school league set to take off
THE Shanghai School Volleyball League was launched at Fudan University yesterday.
The first batch of league members includes 22 universities and colleges as well as 127 primary and secondary schools around the city.
This is Shanghai’s second school sports league following the establishment of the Shanghai School Football League in 2012. A local school basketball league will be unveiled in the near future.
“The league aims at promoting one of the three major ball games among students while spotting young prospects,” said Lu Fang, executive director of the league’s board of management. “Also, we want more girls to participate in volleyball as the other major ball games (football and basketball) usually see more male participants.”
The league has invited volleyball professionals as consultants, including former Chinese women’s national team manager Chen Zhonghe. Training camps will be held to cultivate professional teachers for its member schools. Inter-school matches will also be organized.
According to Chen, 6-to-6 volleyball and beach volleyball will be promoted in colleges and high schools, while primary school and junior school students will take up 4-to-4 volleyball and balloon volleyball.
The league will expand to 30 university and colleges, and 300 primary and secondary school in five years.
Fudan University has a solid tradition in volleyball. Its men’s squad, comprising mainly students, is the only amateur team in China’s top-tier national league.
