City soccer school
THE city government yesterday announced the setting up of the Shanghai School Football League to train students in the game and promote soccer in the country. Students from elementary and secondary schools and universities can now look forward to scientific coaching and training methods.
Shanghai also plans to launch inter-school competitions to identify talents. China lacks youth training program in soccer unlike in other countries. The city only has 1,571 registered youth players while only about 1,800 students participate in the annual campus competitions. The league hopes to train 20,000 players and boost student participation by 30 percent in a decade's time.
