Coach sacked over sex charges
A MALE assistant coach with the Shanghai women's volleyball team has been sacked for allegedly sexual harassing the players, the city sports authority said yesterday.
The coach, who has not been named, allegedly indulged in behavior deemed obscene as, under the influence of alcohol, he offered massages to the players after training last Friday, the Shanghai Administration of Sports said on its official microblog.
"The sexual harassment directly harmed the image of Shanghai women's volleyball and the sport," the administration said in the post. "After discussion, the Shanghai Sports Institute decided to remove the involved coach from the position with an executive warning. The coach has to apologize to the players and their parents and will be transferred away from women's volleyball."
The coach allegedly harassed the players while attempting to give them massage after a training session on November 9. According to an investigation, the coach had dinner with friends before the incident, where he drank too much.
The administration claimed that the coach had expressed his regrets but he was shown no leniency.
The decision to sack the coach followed an investigation launched on Wednesday after a netizen broke the scandal through Weibo.com on Tuesday night.
The claims came to light after a game on Tuesday night, when Shanghai suffered a humiliating 0-3 defeat against Tianjin.
Shanghai, runner-up in the Chinese women's volleyball league last season, was swept aside by Tianjin 10-25, 15-25, 15-25. Shanghai's three national players -- Ma Yunwen, Zhang Lei and Yang Jie - scored just 18 points in total compared to Chen Liyi's 19 points for Tianjin.
Many local fans were concerned about the team's performance and raised questions about the players' attitude and mentality.
