Croatia on track to rival fantastic 鈥98 run

After breezing through one of the hardest groups at the World Cup, Croatia appears to be on course to rival the exploits of its 鈥淐lass of 鈥98鈥, which was beaten in the semifinals by eventual winner France.

Croatia鈥檚 2-1 win over Iceland in Rostov-On-Don on Tuesday, which followed victories over Nigeria and Argentina, secured its place at the top of Group D and a place in the last 16.

It can now dream of going one better than its third-place finish in 1998, which marked its first participation in the World Cup finals as an independent nation.

鈥淲e have to trust in our quality, we respect all our opponents but we don鈥檛 concede that anyone is better than us,鈥 coach Zlatko Dalic said after Tuesday鈥檚 win, secured through a late Ivan Perisic strike.

The Balkan side and Uruguay are the only teams to have won all three of their games so far in Russia.

Not surprisingly, the team鈥檚 sparkle has come in midfield, where players such as Barcelona鈥檚 Ivan Rakitic and Real Madrid鈥檚 Luka Modric, both of whom are now in their 30s, are savoring what could be their last shot at World Cup glory.

Modric has been one of the outstanding players of the 2018 tournament so far and was sublime in Croatia鈥檚 3-0 thumping of Lionel Messi鈥檚 Argentina.

Crucially, though, the 鈥榦ld guard鈥 has been backed up by a younger generation 鈥 players like Ante Rebic, Mateo Kovacic and Marcelo Brozovic 鈥 all of whom play in Europe鈥檚 top leagues.

Their younger legs have given Croatia a remarkable strength in depth.

Of the 23 players in the squad, 22 have been given playing time in Russia so far and it is a measure of how deep Croatia鈥檚 talent pool is that reserve midfielder Milan Badelj was named man-of-the-match against Iceland.

Croatia next faces a defensive Denmark side in the last 16 and it is a match that will test its ability to open up a tight defense. Victory would take it to a quarterfinal against either Spain or Russia.

鈥淚 don鈥檛 think our tournament will end in the last 16 but for now we can only focus on Denmark,鈥 Dalic said.

鈥淲e can only think about what awaits us, but the most important things are still to come.鈥
