Curlers, ice dancing duo boost gold tally
CHINA swept the curling titles and ice dancing crown at the Asian Winter Games yesterday, but its pre-Games prediction of finishing second overall is proving to be beyond reach.
China beat Japan 11-4 to win the men’s curling final, thanks to a decisive six points garnered in the fourth and fifth stanzas, while its women side rallied for a 12-5 victory over South Korea.
Ice dancers Wang Shiyue and Liu Xinyu held onto their lead from the short dance to win China’s eighth gold medal with two days left at the week-long Games.
With the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics less than a year away, China was seeking a second-place finish in Sapporo, behind host Japan.
“We will strive for second, against South Korea and Kazakhstan,” Huang Lixia, the official in charge of the national team training, had said before the Games.
Japan remains top of the medals table with 19 golds, including five yesterday, while South Korea is second on 14 despite a goldless day.
But Kazakhstan is closing in on China after winning two more golds — in the men’s 4x10km relay in freestyle skiing and women’s 10K pursuit in biathlon — yesterday to lie fourth on five in total.
With South Korea unreachable, China is also seemingly under threat from Kazakhstan — the overall winner at the last Games held in Almaty and traditionally strong in skiing that offers 12 golds on the last two days.
Skating to “New York, New York,” the Chinese ice dancers combined dazzling step sequences and powerful lifts to score 98.26 points in free dance for a winning total of 162.28.
Chris Reed and Kana Muramoto of Japan were second with 159.14 points, with another Chinese pair Chen Hong and Zhao Yan third on 142.42 points.
Jin Boyang led after the men’s short program. Jin had two quadruple jumps in his Spiderman routine to score 92.86 points. Japan’s Shoma Uno was second on 92.43 while Jin’s compatriot Yan Han was third with 91.56 points.
Japan won five golds yesterday — the men’s 4x10K and women’s 4x5K relays in cross-country skiing, men’s large hill individual in ski jumping, men’s dual moguls in freestyle skiing, as well as the men’s 12.5K pursuit in biathlon.
