Divers clinch gold, Wong wins controversial road race
CHINA won both diving gold medals on offer in the synchronized events yesterday.
New women's pairing Wang Han and Shi Tingmao scored 315.60 points and claimed gold in synchronized 3-meter springboard event. Malaysia's Yan Yee Ng and Mun Yee Leong (279.90) took silver and Japanese pair of Mai Nakagawa and Sayaka Shibusawa (277.50) could not finish well and had to settle for bronze.
China didn't miss diving diva Guo Jingjing, who skipped the Guangzhou games after winning successive Asian Games gold medals in 2002 and 2006, as Wang and Shi formed a perfect pair for hosts to retain title.
Yang Liguang and Zhou Luxin then combined well in the men's synchronized 10-meter platform to clinch second gold for China with 486.57 points.
Malaysia's Bryan Nickson Lomas and Tze Liang Ooi were 79.41 points behind Chinese pair for silver while North Korea's Kim Chon Man and So Myong Hyok (394.08) won bronze.
Pike position
The Chinese pair wrapped up the session with back two-and-a-half somersaults in pike position which earned them 68.40 points.
Also, China and South Korea booked their tickets to the 2012 London Olympics after winning their last preliminary group matches in women's field hockey.
South Korea defeated Japan 2-0 while China edged India 2-1.
China and South Korea finished the seven-team round robin league with 16 points each, but the hosts led the points table on better goal difference. The gold and silver winners at the Asian Games both get automatic places in the Olympics.
Japan beat defending champion North Korea 1-0 to win the women's football gold medal. Azusa Iwashimizu scored for Japan with a header in the 74th minute.
South Korea claimed the bronze medal by beating China 2-0.
Defending champion Wong Kam Po of China's Hong Kong won a controversial men's road race after the original first-place finisher, Park Sung-baek of South Korea, was relegated to 19th for interference in the closing meters. Park was initially placed first in a photo finish over Wong, both in a time of 4 hours, 14 minutes, 54 seconds.
