World number one and defending champion Novak Djokovic battled past Poland's Jerzy Janowicz 6-3, 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 on Monday to reach the second round of the US Open.
The Serbian star next faces Czech Jiri Vesely, who beat Indian qualifier Saketh Myneni 7-6 (7/5), 4-6, 2-6, 6-2, 7-5.
