England tops Champions Trophy pool unbeaten

ENGLAND topped its Champions Trophy pool by drawing with second-place Belgium 1-1, while Argentina dispatched Germany 3-0 in Bhubaneswar, eastern India, yesterday.

England, seeking its first Trophy title, has been the pick of the teams with wins over five-time defending champion Australia and Pakistan. It conceded an early goal to Belgium but dominated thereafter.

Amaury Keusters put Belgium ahead in the eighth minute but England’s unrelenting pressure led to Iain Lewers producing the equalizer in the 48th minute with a crisp reverse-flick from the top of the circle. Winless teams Australia and Pakistan were to decide third and fourth in the pool.

In Pool B, Argentina handed Olympic champion Germany a second straight loss with its biggest ever win in the Trophy. The Netherlands could top the pool if it beat winless India later. All eight teams are assured of quarterfinal berths, and the final pool positions determine the draw.
