Ex-champion dead

SWEDEN'S former world heavyweight boxing champion Ingemar "Ingo" Johansson died late on Friday at the age of 76, the Swedish Boxing Federation said yesterday. Johansson won the title in 1959, knocking out American Floyd Patterson in the third round in New York.

Johansson, who suffered from Alzheimer's disease, passed away a little before midnight at home in Kungsbacka in southwest Sweden, his daughter Maria Gregner told news agency TT. Johansson had won the European heavyweight title by knocking out Italian Franco Cavicchi in 1956.
