FILA awards 2015 worlds to Las Vegas
USA Wrestling says the 2015 world championships will be held in Las Vegas.
The organization announced on Tuesday that FILA, the international wrestling federation, has chosen Las Vegas to host the championships in September 2015.
The event will be the first qualifying event for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. It will feature competition in men's and women's freestyle and Greco-Roman and will award the largest number of 2016 Olympic spots of any meet.
The International Olympic Committee executive board last week dropped wrestling from the program of the 2020 Games, a decision which brought a sharp backlash from wrestling organizations and national Olympic bodies around the world - including the United States, Russia and Iran.
The move must still be ratified by the full International Olympic Committee in September, giving wrestling time to try to overturn a decision against a sport which dates back to the ancient Olympics and has been featured since the inaugural modern games in 1896.
USA Wrestling has formalized plans for a committee charged with restoring Olympic wrestling.
The organization announced on Monday that the group will be known as the Committee for the Preservation of Olympic Wrestling. The committee will be chaired by former world champion Bill Scherr.
Meanwhile, Japan's wrestling chief yesterday urged Olympic medalists the world over to join forces to save their sport from the chop.
Tomiaki Fukuda, vice president of FILA, said in Tokyo he had proposed the lobbying plan in letters to all executives of the organization. The medalists, including three-time Olympic champions Alexander Karelin of Russia and Saori Yoshida of Japan, are being asked to gather in the Russian city of St Petersburg when the IOC executive board meets on May 26-31.
