Fiji wins Hong Kong Sevens title for a record 17th time
FIJI won the Hong Kong Rugby Sevens for a record-extending 17th time yesterday, beating South Africa 22-0 in a lopsided final to win its first tournament since the Rio Olympics.
Still rebuilding after several senior players and its former coach Ben Ryan left after winning the Olympic gold medal, the South Pacific Islanders ended their lean run this season in spectacular fashion by claiming the most prestigious event on the World Series circuit in China’s Hong Kong for the third year in a row. For South Africa, the current World Series leader, the long wait for its first Hong Kong title goes on after the Blitzboks finished runners-up for the fourth time. Australia, beaten 12-33 by Fiji in the semifinals, defeated the United States 26-19 to win the third-place playoff, its best result of the season.
