First case of dengue reported in athletes village

THE first case of dengue fever in the athletes village has added to the woes of Delhi officials already facing criticism for shoddy preparations ahead of the biggest ever Commonwealth Games.

Ruptu Gogoi, a member of the Indian lawn bowling team contracted the mosquito-borne viral disease and has been admitted to hospital.

More than 1,000 cases, including three deaths, have been reported in the city since June and organizers have tried a number of methods, including "mosquito fish," to stop the spread of the disease before the Games open later today.

"This is the first case of dengue that has come to us. In all probability he got it from outside the village. The guy has been in Delhi since March," a spokesperson for the GB Pant hospital, where the athlete has been admitted, said today.

Gogoi arrived in the village on September 23 and went to see doctors two days later.

"He has been constantly monitored and has shown a lot of improvement... He is stable now. We are planning to release him tomorrow (on Monday)."
