Francona quits Red Sox after eight years
TERRY Francona's eight-year run as manager of the Boston Red Sox ended on Friday when the Major League Baseball team announced he was not returning next season.
Francona, nicknamed Tito, led the Red Sox to the World Series title in 2004 - ending a championship drought dating back to 1918 - and again in 2007, but speculation about his future increased after the Red Sox missed this season's playoffs after a dramatic late season collapse. Meanwhile, Tony Reagins stepped down as general manager of the Los Angeles Angels on Friday after the team's failure to reach the playoffs for a second successive season. Reagins, who became general manager in October 2007, will remain with the Angels as a special assistant to club chairman Dennis Kuhl.
