Germany edges Australia to reach semis

TINA Bachman scored the lone goal to give Germany a 1-0 win over Australia on Tuesday and a berth in the semifinals of the women's field hockey World Cup in Argentina.

The victory in the closing game of Pool A gave Germany 12 points and second place. Defending champion the Netherlands defeated Japan 5-2 to finish atop the pool with an unbeaten 5-0 record and 15 points.

In the day's other game, New Zealand defeated India 3-0.

Germany will next face Pool B winner Argentina, while the Netherlands plays England, the second-place team in Pool B. The semifinals will be played today with the final on Saturday.

The other eight teams will play off for fifth to 12th place.

Germany coach Michael Behrmann said his team had to adjust to a crowd of about 10,000. "Of course, we are not very used to a big crowd in Germany," he said. "That is why we have been training for over a year to have such a big match in such a big stadium. I think at the end we deserved to win."
